Wendy's Heisman August 27th, 2008
The Wendy’s High School Heisman Awards Program recognizes high school seniors who have excelled in academics, athletics, and community/school involvement during their high school careers.
Students are eligible if they:
- Are a high school senior and are graduating in the Class of 2009
- Participate in at least one school-sponsored, extracurricular sport
- Have maintained at least a B (3.0) GPA during their first three years of high school
We have 36 sports we acknowledge including judo, hockey, cross country, and volleyball. Just because our award is the High School Heisman, doesn’t mean we are only focused on football.
The program also stresses the importance of community service and involvement. This is a great opportunity to talk about the volunteer activities you’ve participate in. Time spent working with groups or clubs and any special events you worked on will be valuable to include in the application – especially if you held a leadership position.

1. Go on Campus Visits and Tours
School websites and brochures only tell half the story. To get a real feel for a school, you need to visit the campus. Typically, the Admissions Department provides tours conducted by student ambassadors. This is a great opportunity to see the facilities, ask questions to a current student, and, if you wait until the school year starts up again, check out the student population and the vibe on campus. This will help you narrow down your list of schools to apply to. U.S. News & World Report just issued their 2009 list of America’s Best Colleges – see how your potential schools ranked.
2. Apply for the Wendy’s Heisman Award Program
Of course we’re going to put ourselves on the list! The Wendy’s Heisman is the premier high school scholar athlete award. Each fall, the nation’s most esteemed high school seniors are recognized for their achievements in academics, athletics, and community/school involvement. The first 41,100 applicants get a letter and Wendy’s gift card so it’s good to apply early. The application deadline is October 1, so get to work! 3. Get to Work on Your Halloween Costume
Too early, you say? If you’re going to pull off something clever, you’re going to need to start planning. Everyone else will be trolling the thrift shops and army surplus stores by the middle of October and you’ll need to beat the rush. Trust us, think about it early and then you’ll have a few weeks to get the best outfit and props. Plus, Party City is already selling Halloween costumes on their website – and it’s still August…

Looking to apply for student scholarships & awards? From getting recognized for your high school accomplishments to receiving money to help pay for college tuition and books, there are many benefits to researching and applying for high school student awards & scholarships. You just need to know where to look:
1. Your Guidance Counselor – This is always the best place to start. The Guidance Department will know what local/community awards are given annually, what college scholarships you should apply for based on your grades, interests and abilities, and how to get a leg up on the competition.
2. The Web – There are plenty of sources of information on the Internet; all you have to do is Google a few terms and there are thousands of results. But be careful. Many of these sites offer free information but are set up to find students who will need financial aid for college and they will be eager to get your contact information so they can send you offers for loans.
3. Companies – Many large businesses look to provide college scholarships & awards to local students to support the community where the company is located. It is common for companies to award scholarships to students who plan to study the type of subject matter that the business supports (e.g. an accounting firm would want a business major, a hospital would want a biology or pre-med major).
